Aligarh based conspiracies against AMU Malappuram campus: Kerala MLA

By Abdul Basith MA, TwoCircles.net,

Perintalmanna [Malappuram]: “Ever since PK Abdul Azis stepped down as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, there have been some serious conspiracies from the part of a few AMU based officials and administrators against its off campus at Malappuram, central minister and the local MP E Ahmed too seems silent against these vicious moves against the Malappuram centre; the new VC Zameeruddin Shah recently visited the centre but that too hasn’t brought forward any remedies to the problems faced by the off campus,” said KT Jaleel, MLA while speaking to TCN.

Not even a single permanent staff appointment was carried out here since last two years. The centre was supposed to be granted with the 140 crore rupees last year but the centre hasn’t received the amount yet. Under normal conditions the expenditure and finance committee under the central govt allocates the amount within 6-7 months of the proposal, but the campus has been waiting for the amount since last two years.

Until now 5 crore rupees has been allocated for building walls around the proposed campus and13 crore rupees for building temporary structures to run the MBA and LLB classes. Besides this a small amount has been allocated to meet the daily expenditures and to pay out the salaries of the temporary teaching and non-teaching staffs. Seeing job insecurity, already a few faculty and staff members have obtained transfers and a few others are on the way.

“The negligence makes it appear like as if they have started a parallel college and not the prestigious AMU off campus, they are yet to start any courses other than the initial two, 2 year long MBA and 5 year long LLB courses” says KT Jaleel MLA.

Students selected to these courses earlier had the privilege to report either at the Malappuram centre or at the main centre at Aligarh but this year the choice was restricted to the Aligarh campus. The students received selection cards only two days prior to the reporting date and it was almost impossible for them to overcome these procedural tasks. Luckily, after a press meet called by KT Jaleel MLA on this issue; the AMU officials allowed the students to report at the off campus at Malappuram as well. Otherwise there won’t have been even 10 students enrolled to each of these courses from Kerala.

In the year 2010-11 there were four MBA and six LLB seats which went unfilled but in 2011-12 this rapidly increased up to 5 for MBA and 25 for the LLB course. This academic year it is expected to worsen further.

The Director of the Perintalmanna centre too seems undone by the crisis faced by the off campus; he too has expressed his helplessness. The press meet had earlier called for immediate actions from the part of Central Minister E Ahmed, MP from Malappuram district ET Muhammed Basheer to contact the VC and other officials to ensure admission to the selected students. It was only after this the selected students were able to report at the Perintalmanna centre.

“There have been intentional attempts to spread rumours like the faculty is not that good at the Malappuram centre so as to keep students uninterested in enrolling for courses here. This has been the result of conspiracies from the part of a few AMU based officials and administrators who are keen on blocking the central funds meant for the off campus. They are believed to have been conspiring further to prevent any permanent staff appointments at the centre as well” alleged KT Jaleel MLA.

He believes that the conspiracies against the centre have been there during the tenure of Abdul Azis as well but the moves against the centre strengthened soon after he stepped down. “All student and youth organisations are obliged to come up against these moves to weaken the prospects of this much dreamed initiative, the conspirers have been aiming at shutting down the off campus at any cost, it is better to act soon than late”
