Court grants bail to BJP leader Gupta

By IANS,

New Delhi : Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijender Gupta was Friday granted bail by a local court in a defamation case filed by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit.

Metropolitan Magistrate Saumya Chouhan granted bail to Gupta on personal bail bond of Rs.15,000 with one surety of like amount.

Gupta appeared in the court with large number of lawyers and supporters.

There was high voltage drama in the court room when Dikshit’s counsel Mehmood Pracha moved her personal exemption application and Gupta’s lawyers opposed it.

Counsel representing Gupta, Ajay Digpaul, Neeraj Kumar and Abhay Kumar Verma raised doubt on the manner the statement was recorded by the chief minister in the case.

How has the court allowed the exemption application for the chief minister, she should also be present in the court on each hearing as she is complainant in the case, said Gupta’s counsel.

They told the court that Dikshit has only appeared once in the case even though court has given seven dates of hearing.

The court directed the lawyers and other people who are not associated with the case to leave the room to which the lawyers raised objection.

Irked over the lawyers reaction, the judge adjourned the hearing and fixed the next date for Oct 12.

The complaint filed by Dikshit before the magistrate said that to gain political mileage by maligning her, the BJP leader had used “uncivilised” language against her before the civic polls.

Dikshit alleged that Gupta called her a “villain” and “vamp” and also said that she had cheated the people of Delhi.

The chief minister May 30 recorded her statement against Gupta and requested the court to summon him.
