Ranchi : The driver of a private car, suspected to be carrying a Maoist leader, was killed in firing by Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel near Ranchi on Monday, police said.

According to police, CRPF personnel spotted a Bolero car on the Arki-Tamar road, about 40 km from Ranchi. The personnel signalled the vehicle to stop, but the driver started firing at CRPF men and tried to speed away.

The CRPF personnel retaliated with gunfire in which the driver of the car sustained injuries. Three people in the vehicle managed to escape in the nearby jungle. The driver died on way to hospital.

“There was information that a Maoist leader was coming to Ranchi in the vehicle. An operation has been launched to nab the people who escaped,” an official told IANS.
