Governmental neglect defines Kheta Sarai of Jaunpur

Jaunpur: Sewer water is spilling over the surface in a Muslim-dominated hutment called Jogiana in Kheta Sarai area of Jaunpur assembly constituency. Poverty and governmental neglect are writ large all around. Most people have no latrin and whatever they have as latrin becomes stinky and overflowing in rainy season thanks to no proper sewerage system.

People are poor, they have huts, there is no road and no sewerage, says a young man. “Garbage is not picked, sewers not cleaned, there is drinking water problem. Is it a village? Better than this is the area where live chamars (cobblers, one of the castes for whose cause the ruling Bahujan Samaj Party has been striving), says angry Sharfuddin.

This is not all. Many people have not got even ration card though they are clearly in the category of BPL (Below Poverty Line). Hajra, a widow, has many members in her family but only her name is listed in her ration card.

Several youths have not got election identity card even after being photographed for four times. And more importantly, widow pension has stopped coming to the village for last two years.

Condition of road is not good even market area of Kheta Sarai — the largest Muslim pocket of Jaunpur assembly segment.

Farhan Ahmed is from Azamgarh. He runs a mobile shop and mobile repair training centre in Kheta Sarai market. “I am 28 and I have never seen this road in good shape. Government comes and goes. All parties have ruled –Congress, BJP, SP and BSP. But nothing has changed,” says Ahmed.

The second problem is of electricity.

“About 15 years back, Rajnath Singh had said if his BJP government continued he will provide light for 24 hours, things have just worsened,” says Ahmed.

Mohd Tahir Advocate of the area says light was better in his childhood. “Road and light are big problems here. Price hike and unemployment have snatched smile from faces,” says Adv. Tahir.

Though people have lost hope in parties, but this time they are willing to vote for young Congress leader Nadeem Jawed who is contesting for Jaunpur seat.

“People want to give Nadeem a chance, he is youth leader, he was president of NSUI, Congress youth wing, and he is said to be close to Rahul Gandhi, so people hope he can change things here,” says Farhan Ahmed.

Jaunpur will go to poll in the 3rd Phase on 15th February.
