China to check inferior food products

Beijing : China will tighten measures to stop the production of substandard health food products, authorities said.

"With inadequate control measures many substandard products exist in the health food market," said Tong Min, an official of the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA).

Tong said companies that sell weight loss and blood sugar reduction products use illegal additives and exaggerate the effects of their products in advertisements.

SFDA will revise its regulations to adjust the permitted scope and usage of health food products, China Daily Wednesday quoted Tong as saying.

China has 2,054 health food production companies with an annual production value of 260 billion yuan ($41.3 billion).
