Why was Guwahati molestation video put on YouTube, ask netizens

By IANS,

New Delhi : Social networks were Friday flooded with angry reactions over the molestation of a teenager in Guwahati, with many questioning as to why the video was uploaded on YouTube and the victim’s identity revealed.

“That poor girl in Guwahati has been violated so many times over. The molestation video going viral, her identity being revealed SHAME!” Arpita Das wrote on Twitter.

“No paper or TV has the right to show the face of victim. The victim’s face was shown to titillate voyeurs. The guidelines are clear,” said senior journalist Kanchan Gupta.

Booker prize winning author Arundhati Roy said: “Guwahati molestation incident is a national shame. I doubt the perpetrators may get an escape in the name of inquiry.”

Another comment on Twitter from Samar Halarnkar said: “So glad to see the disgusting Guwahati molestation video has been removed by YouTube.”

In an open letter to some media organisations, a group of girls said: “We agree that the video footage has helped us identify 7 out of the 20 men and the police has caught 3 of them, but why has the media flashed the entire video footage on TV and it went viral of YouTube? Could it not have taken snapshots of people and asked for identification quizzes? Or the media could have just given the video to the police for further investigation. If tomorrow, we get raped, will we be filmed and flashed on TV,” asked the letter written by Priyanjana Das, Kasturi Ratan Verma, Shruti Sarma Hazarika and Kaustuv Prakash Pathak.
