Tea planter killed in Assam

Guwahati : Suspected cadres of the anti-talk faction of the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) Tuesday killed the owner of a tea estate and injured his security guard in Assam, police said.

Police said that a group of suspected anti-talk NDFB cadres fired at the vehicle of Adilur Rahman and his security personnel at Nagada in Sonitpur district near Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border around 1 p.m. Rahman died on the spot.

Nagada is located about 20 km north of Sootea subdivision in the district.

Rahman owned the Mahalaxmi tea estate in the area.

“While Rahman died on the spot, one of his security personnel sustained bullet injuries,” said Superintendent of Police Apurba Jiban Baruah.

The militants fired several rounds at the vehicle, Baruah said.

One of his securitymen, who is a member of the Assam Tea Protection Force (ATPF), received severe bullet injuries and was being shifted to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital, he said.

The incident took place at a time when the central government’s peace interlocutor for the northeast P.C. Halder had been initiating talks with the leader of anti-talk faction of the Bodo militant outfit Ranjan Daimary in Guwahati jail.

Halder had met Daimary several times inside Guwahati Central Jail.
