IOA grants provisional affiliation to five federations

By IANS,

New Delhi : The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) Thursday accorded provisional affiliation to five national sports federations and also announced a three-judge committee to monitor the Nov 25 election to the apex authority of Indian sport.

The five associations have been granted affiliation for one year and they will all have to fulfil certain conditions to gain full membership. The new members are: the Ice Skating Association Of India, Ice Hockey Association of India, Indian Amateur luge Association, the Indian Golf Union and the Modern Pentathlon.

“We appointed a five-member committee to discuss the issue of affiliation of federations and they have recommended that one-year provisional affiliation be granted to five national federations and they be given voting rights as well for the November elections,” IOA acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra told reporters after its Special General Body Meeting (SGBM) here.

“The federations, by and large, qualify for affiliation, but they still need to comply with certain relevant provisions of the IOA constitution and they need to fulfil them within a year or else they would be disaffiliated,” he added.

The five-member committee has decided to grant affiliation to four federations but the majority of the members in the SGBM recommended the case of Modern Pentathlon as well.

“The modern pentathlon was given affiliation after the entire house favoured it,” IOA acting president Malhotra said.
