Bahenji & Biryani are new social engineering formula for BSP in Old Delhi

New Delhi: Chandni Chowk, the medieval era mega market today is identified with the fragrance of spirituality, compositeness of cultures and mouth-watering delicacies. But in the hectic season of poll campaign the fragrances are replaced by the smell of burning crackers, marigold petals and, quite exclusively, biryanis.

Mausam Ali, BSP candidate from Chandni chowk fighting against the sitting MLA Prahlad Singh Sawhney of Congress, Suman Kumar Gupta of BJP, Vikram Badhwar of AAP and Khurram Iqbal from JDU who is also a councillor from Jama Masjid.

Among them, Mausam Ali is placing his own bet to grab his piece of cake from the walled city. He is depending on the magic of Behenji (BSP Supremo Mayawati) and also people’s love for biryani.

While addressing a rally in Tilak Bazaar locality near Fatehpuri Mosque he humbly got up from his chair to give what could be called as one of the shortest speech given by a candidate and said, “You will have to bring BSP to number one position by voting on the option no. 2 in the ballot box,” he appealed to the crowd of about 150 local people a quarter of which were little kids having no knowledge of politics. They were there not for him but for the “good food” which was promised to them.

“Please do not leave before having dinner,” as the candidate’s aid shouted from the podium, a young man mischievously asked him back, “first tell us what have you prepared for us.” The very next minute big oval serving plates of biryanis started coming from behind and the crowd ramped up pro-BSP slogans even louder. Among the attendees, poor and homeless people were also present who showed their happiness and sung praises of Mausam Ali.

Later, while speaking to TCN in his office he said, “In the last election BSP had secured 16% of total votes polled in Delhi. In Mayawati’s tenure as UP Chief Minister there were no riots and 18 ministries were given to Nasimuddin Siddiqui alone. When the country became independent Muslims share was 38-40% but now our contribution is about 1% so we have to think which party thinks good for us,” he said.

He also said that BSP is not siding with any Imam of any mosque for votes and BSP does not have any alliance with any cleric like Congress, AAP or BJP. “You see Mayawati does not believe in buying off people of faith for party’s gains. I have not taken to cheap politics,” he clarified.

Mausam Ali is also against using Modi’s name and creating “fear among Muslims” to get their votes. “Modi showed that Gujarat was shining but reality is something else which we all know. Modi may be a big figure in Gujarat but in the country he is a no show. I am contesting on the issue of development and education and on behalf of Sarva Samaj as BSP believes,” he told.

“In a recent rally in Ashok Vihar BSP supremo had said that poor will get free flats to live if BSP is voted to power,” he added.

Putting aside all the speculation on whether AAP can make a dent in BSP’s SC votes he said that it is just AAP’s propaganda and nothing else as BSP’s vote shares are bound to increase.

At a distance, a rally was being held by Imran Hussain who is contesting from Ballimaran on BSP ticket. “You vote me to power and I will work for you tirelessly as I have done as a councillor. The 500-800 strength of the locals in the rally was enough to make it hard not to think of Imran as an underdog. He asked for votes in the name of Mayawati and BSP’s secular record in UP.

“You have seen the five year tenure of BSP and compare it with Congress’s treatment of Old Delhi or SP’s lip service to Muzaffarnagar riot victims. Even a child can find out the difference I’m indicating towards,” he shouted from the six foot high stage full of BSP supporters.
