New Delhi: A Supreme Court lawyer has filed a petition to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of India requesting urgent action and intervention for the violations of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by political parties for putting advertisements in newspapers on the day of election.

SC advocate Naushad Ahmed Khan has written to the CEC seeking cognizance into advertisement by BJP in today’s English daily Times of India and Hindi daily Navbharat Times, that carried advertisements on first two pages “wooing and seeking votes for the sake of publicity and to influence the public at large on the day of election which directly and unequivocally contravenes section 126 of the representation of people act and election code of conduct.”

Section 126 of the Representation of the People Act (1951) clearly prohibits campaigning or “display to the public any election matter by means of cinematograph, television or other similar apparatus.”

The petitioner alleges that “cores of electors of Delhi have been directly influenced which would affect the result of the election.”

The advertisements carry 10 photos of all leaders of the BJP, the slogan with election agenda reading in Hindi urging voters to bring change in Delhi and country, to make BJP victorious, and promises of other such freebies.

The petitioner has demanded actions against the newspapers as well as the party.

Meanwhile, Indian Express has also published smaller ads both of Congress and BJP on its third page.
