Besides the law and order situation in the state, Mayawati also targeted the Akhilesh Yadav government for its failure to fulfill promises towards Muslims. This is in stark contrast to the past where Mayawati after losing the polls in 2012 had stated that she did not get votes from Muslim.

With Lok Sabha election scheduled for next year, the statement from Mayawati once again brought Muslims to the centerstage with Akhilesh Yadav reeling under pressure to fulfill its promises done to Muslims.

Mayawati categorically stated that SP in its election campaign had promised several things to the Muslims. She stated that SP had promised reservation to Muslims in proportion to their population like Dalits.

However the party has now passed the ball in center government’s court. The remark was in reference to SP’s national general secretary Prof. Ram Gopal Yadav’s statement that UP government will pass a resolution for reservation in state assembly to Muslims and send it to center for implementation.

Mayawati claimed that SP government was now backtracking on its promises. She also said that even well wisher of SP namely Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari of Jama Masjid has now stated that SP government has done little for Muslims and it has failed to live upto the expectations. The statement of Bukhari came when he was in a marriage at Aligarh and was reported by media. Mayawati took the media reports stating that even supporters of SP were unsatisfied over Muslim issue.

Mayawati also specifically raked up Narendra Modi’s issue stating that she does not want Modi as Prime Minister of India. She said that it was an internal matter of Bhartiya Janta Party but BSP will never like to see Modi for PM.

With these remarks, Mayawati has brought the SP government which is considered to be Muslim friendly on back-foot. A statement which is totally tilted towards Muslims from BSP was the least thing desired by SP which claims to be Muslim-friendly party.

A soften stand towards Muslims will surely send the message among the community and BSP may reap benefits as Akhilesh Yadav government is facing the stigma of several riots during his regime in 2012.
