Rwanda genocide victims demand justice

Kigali: The survivors of the 1994 Tutsi genocide in Rwanda appealed Sunday to Western countries to apprehend genocide fugitives ahead of Monday’s event to commemorate 20 years of the event.

“I lost all my family during the genocide but the people who mercilessly killed them are moving freely in France and Belgium. I am so devastated about this because I want justice for my family,” Xinhua quoted Marie Clare Mukayiranga, a survivor, as saying.

The 50-year-old woman blames Western countries and the UN for doing less or nothing to bring perpetrators of genocide to Rwanda to face justice.

Since 2007, Rwanda’s government has issued indictments against 1,092 fugitives living outside the country.

Events commemorating the genocide officially last a week, but the commemoration continues up to July 4, marking 100 days of genocide.
