‘Liquor seized since March in Bengal double over last year’

Kolkata : The Election Commission Monday said seizure of illicit liquor by the excise department in West Bengal since March 5 to now was “more than double” than in the same period last year.

During the span from March 5 – when the Lok Sabha elections were announced – to April 12, illicit liquor apprehended stands at 2,89,178 litres while it was 1,40, 608 litres in the same time frame last year.

“Monetary worth of the liquor seized this year is Rs.2.31 crore,” assistant chief electoral officer Amitjyoti Bhattacharya told reporters here.

A total of 1,036 illegal arms were seized in the state since March 5 while four arms manufacturing centre were raided.

Bhattacharya also said central armed police force will be deployed in sensitive booths according to protocol.
