US drone strike kill 30 Al Qaeda fighters in Yemen

Sanaa: At least 30 Al Qaeda fighters were killed and many others injured Sunday when a US drone carried out an attack against a terrorist training centre in Yemen, an official said.

The US drone Sunday struck a training camp and convoy, composed of four vehicles carrying armed terrorists, in Abyan province, killing up to 30 militants and injuring dozens of others, Xinhua reported citing a military official on condition of anonymity.

The attacks took place in the mountainous region of Mahfad in the province.

“The death toll from the US drone strikes has risen to 30,” a security official said.

The Supreme Security Committee in Yemen issued a statement saying that “multiple successful air strikes targeted Al Qaida hideouts killing dozens of foreign and Yemeni militants in a rugged region between Abyan and Shabwa provinces”.

According to an earlier report, five militants were killed by the US drone strike.

The US has escalated its drone strikes on suspected Al Qaeda targets in Yemen since President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi took office in February 2012 after a UN-backed deal removed former President Ali Abdullah Saleh from power.
