Congress betrayed fishermen’s interests: Jayalalithaa

Chennai : AIADMK general secretary J.Jayalalithaa Sunday charged the Congress-led government at the centre with betraying the interests of fishermen.

Addressing an election rally here, the Tamil Nadu chief minister said: “The fishing community knows it is only the AIADMK who is their friend. Fishermen would not accept that AIADMK is not concerned about them.”

Jayalalithaa was responding to Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s statement at a rally in Kanyakumari that the AIADMK was not concerned about fishermen’s welfare.

Gandhi had said it was the Congress government that facilitated talks between the fishing communities of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

Listing out the welfare measures taken by her government for the fishermen, Jayalalithaa wondered why the decisions taken at the 2010 meeting between the fishermen of Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka were not implemented by the centre.

She also said the centre has not shared with the state the decisions taken at the 2011 meeting between the fishing communities of both the nations.

Jayalalithaa also questioned as to why Sri Lankan forces are being trained in India when they continue to attack Indian fishermen.
