“He will fill the post left vacant by the former health minister Maithripala Sirisena who joined the opposition as the common candidate to challenge President Rajapaksa at the polls,” a notice issued by the information department said.

Sri Lanka is awaiting the presidential election slated for Jan 8, which is expected to be a close race.

The frontrunners are the incumbent president and his main rival, Sirisena.
