Ahmed was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of the Aligarh Muslim University from 2002-2007. In fact people who knew him from Haryana were surprised to see his soft approach in some matters while administering AMU. It was during his tenure as VC that the bold step of introducing Muslim reservation was taken at AMU. Even though almost three decades ago Tayabji Committee had recommended Muslim reservation but due to lack of will and courage, his predecessors could not take this kind of decision.

As Chairman of the Haryana Waqf Board, Ahmed not only got restored many pre partition mosques but was also instrumental in creating a minority engineering college in Mewat. Moreover with his honest and able administration, he increased the revenues of Haryana Waqf Board more than ten times.

Faizan Mustafa, current Vice-Chancellor NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad, who served as Registrar under Ahmed in AMU, remembers him as an honest and hard-working man, who would take personal interest in works.

He feels that the UPA Government has chosen a right man for the job, who would take the commission to new heights and raise issues related to minorities without any fear and with full sincerity and commitment.

IAS Naseem Ahmed took charge from Wajahat Habibbullah on March 4.
