The rally is a wide-ranging coalition of different interest groups protesting over everything from indigenous rights and climate change inaction to the mistreatment of refugees, coal seam gas and corporate greed.

A handful of protesters wore Guy Fawkes masks, the symbol of the global hacking movement Anonymous, in defiance of laws which prohibit masks in security zones.

One protester said that the group had been concerned about breaking the law.

“But after a number of discussions with police liaison officers, we reached a bit of a compromise.

“Even though technically it’s a prohibited item, we’re not making any effort to conceal our identities. It’s purely a symbol,” the protester said.

The group said they would wear the masks on the back of their heads.

Another protester concealed his identity using a gas mask, protesting against the coal seam gas industry.

There has been at least one arrest so far.
