Courts need to be more accountable: Parrikar

Panaji : Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar Monday said the judiciary has to be more accountable because its decisions have an impact on the country’s economic trajectory.

Parrikar was speaking in the assembly during a discussion on the constitutional amendment pertaining to the judicial accountability bill.

The chief minister cited the long-drawn coal allotment controversy case as a point for his argument.

“The higher the judiciary, the more accountable it should be because it can impact the economic trajectory of the country, which is not part of the judicial function,” Parrikar said.

“Today I am sorry to say we have spent $25 billion in importing coal when India has the second largest coal reserves in the world,” he said, suggesting that the long drawn judicial standoff has led to a freeze on the country’s coal industry.
