Burnt Madrasa student no more, WB govt orders CID enquiry

Kolkata/Medinipur: Amiruddin Khan (16), a Madrasa Hafiz-e-Quran student who was set afire by unidentified persons at the Bhagwanpur Madrassa Darul Uloom of Medinipur has died.

Khan had stepped out of the Madrassa building for Wazu on October 21 at around 9.15 pm when he was tied to the building’s window and set afire. He had suffered 70% burns and after one week of treatment, succumbed to his burn injuries on October 28 at a nursing home at Kolkata.

West Bengal government has ordered a CID (Crime Investigation department) investigation. Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma said on Wednesday, “The death of Madrasa student Amiruddin is mysterious and doubt full. Realizing the importance, the state government has decided to conduct a special enquiry by WB CID.”

The earlier investigation was headed by DSP Syed Ahmadullah under the supervision by the Police Super of Purba Medinipur district Sukesh Jain.

Amiruddin Khan’s father Sahjad Khan and mother Majeda Bibi were at his bedside when Dr Jamaluddin Shams of the nursing home at Kolkata declared him dead on October 28. Scores of eminent Muslims reached the nursing home to console Khan’s parents. Maulana Muhammad Shafique, Maulana Siddiqullah Chowdhiry and other clerics did special prayers in front of Khan’s body.

At around 11 am, his body was taken to Mominpur Morgue for post mortem but postmortem was completed on Wednesday afternoon “due to police negligence” people claimed. Amiruddin Khan’s Namaz e Janaza was held at Nakhoda Mosque headed by Maulana Muhammad Shafique, Imam of Nakhoda Mosque the same evening.

His body was then taken to his native village Shabra under the Belda police station of Paschim Medinipur district. Maulana Yahia Khan, head teacher of Bhagwanpur Madrassa Darul Uloom told TCN over telephone tonight that, Khan’s second Namaz e Janaza was made in his village around 11pm on Wednesday and cremated at the public graveyard.

Meanwhile, on October 28 itself Jamiat-e Ulama-e Hind called a demonstration on the Tamluk Digha Highway at Bajkul junction under the Bhagwanpur police station to protest Khan’s death and police inaction. The protestors demanded a CBI enquiry into the matter and blocked the road.

They also organized a protest rally demanding immediate arrest of culprits responsible for killing Khan. JUH supporters demanded at least Rs 5 lakh compensation and a government job for the victim’s family.

JUH also called road block campaigning for one hour from 10am to 11am on Wednesday throughout the state. Different places of the districts of South and North 24 Parganas, Burdwan, Birbhum, Nadia, Purba Medinipur and Howrah saw blocking of road and rail traffic for an hour. Students of Bhagwanpur Madrassa Darul Uloom blocked the bus road at Bajkul More on the National Highway 41 to protest the death. A protest convention was held at Grant Hall in Baharampur town of Murshidabad. JUH and Madrasa Saving Harmony Committee jointly called the protest convention with Maulana Siddiqullah Chowdhury being the main speaker. He too demanded a CBI inquiry.

After TCN informed that the state government has decided to go for CID enquiry, Chowdhury welcomed the decision and said, police should be more active and immediately arrest Khan’s killers.
