New Delhi : Three policemen and a doctor were Thursday examined as prosecution witness in a court in a case lodged against activist Irom Sharmila for attempting suicide during her fast-unto-death here in 2006.
Sharmila, 40-year-old activist from Manipur, was also presented before the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Akash Jain in pursuance of a warrant issued against her.
The court examined Prashant Sinha, Head of Department Emergency in Fortis Hospital, Vasant Kunj, who was then a doctor in All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and examined Sharmila in October 2006.
He told court that Sharmila’s health was deteriorated due to the hunger strike.
Three policeman – assistant commissioner of police (retd) G.L. Mehta, assistant sub inspector Anang Pal Singh and constable Bijender Singh – were also testified as witness in the case.
They told the court that Sharmila was taken to the hospital as her medical condition was deteriorating.
The court will continue to record witnesses’ statement Friday.
The court in May recorded statements of two prosecution witnesses – station house officer of Connaught Place Satish Kaushik and investigating officer in the case Subhash Chander.
Sharmila has been on a fast for about 12 years, demanding the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
The court March 4, 2013, framed charges against Sharmila, popularly known as “Iron lady”, for attempting to commit suicide, and put her on trial after she refused to plead guilty of the offence.
However, Sharmila denied that she attempted suicide while fasting at Jantar Mantar here.
