AMU to organize Sir Syed Innovation Festival

Aligarh: The Innovation Council of Aligarh Muslim University is organizing Sir Syed Innovation Festival to tap innovative skills and to promote research activities in the University. This festival, which is to be an annual phenomenon, will be organized on October 10-12, 2014.

The Innovation Council, with the Pro-Vice Chancellor as its Chairman, has instituted two Best Innovation of the Year prizes. The Best Innovation of the Year prize of Rs. 50,000/- shall be awarded to a University student and another Best Innovation of the Year prize of Rs. 25,000/- will be awarded to a University school student for the best innovation displayed or showcased in the Sir Syed Innovation Festival.

Prof. S. Mahdi Abbas Rizvi, Convener, Innovation Council, exhorted the University and school students to participate and showcase their innovation in the festival. Students who desire to participate in the Festival shall fill a prescribed proforma in duplicate and submit in the office of the Chairman/Principal by October 8, 2014.

Prof. Rizvi said that the University has also instituted two awards incentivizing research in the University. The Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award of Rupees One lac shall be given away each year for the best research performed during one academic session to a University teacher among the Faculties of Science, Life Sciences including Interdisciplinary Biotech Unit, Engineering & Technology, Medicine, Unani Medicine and Agriculture.

Similarly, another Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award of Rs. One lac shall be given away each year for the best research performed during one Academic Session to a University teacher among the Faculties of Arts, Social Sciences, Law, Commerce, Management Studies & Research and Theology.

Prof. Rizvi said that the University has framed rules and policy for awarding the Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award. The teachers are required to send their applications on the prescribed proforma through the Dean of the concerned Faculty for the research work performed by them during one academic session. For the Award-2014, the research work carried out for the last 5 years during the Sessions 2009-2010 through to 2013-2014 shall be considered.

He said that the Deans shall send maximum of 5 nominations of teachers belonging to their faculty to the Convener, Innovation Council by September 30, 2014. For the single or two department faculties, maximum 2 nominations are to be forwarded. In case of Women’s College, the nominations are to be routed through the Dean of the concerned Faculty.

Prof. Rizvi clarified that the awards will be given on recommendation of the concerned committee constituted by the Vice Chancellor for the two awards. The committees will be consisting of three eminent educationists/researchers belonging to the appropriate disciplines who have never been in the employment of the University. In case the committee does not find any work submitted to them worthy of being awarded the outstanding researcher award in any given year, no award shall be given in that category in that year. The award shall be announced and given away on the Sir Syed Day each year.

Prof. Rizvi said that for the Outstanding Researcher of the Year Award-2014, nominations are invited from the Deans of Faculties on prescribed proforma available in the office of the concerned Dean, Innovation Council and on the website www.amu.ac.in/innovation.jsp, latest by September 30, 2014. He said that nominations received after the last date shall not be considered.
