Pakistan to name new ISI chief soon: Report

Islamabad : At a time when the Pakistan Army is being viewed as again meddling in politics, the country’s top spy agency — Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) — may get a new boss with the current ISI chief due to retire in October.

The new ISI chief’s name may be announced by next week. The announcement is likely to come along with the appointment of five new lieutenant generals in the Pakistan Army, the Dawn quoted a report published in the BBCUrdu as saying.

The current ISI chief, Lt Gen Zaheerul Islam, and five lieutenant generals are scheduled to retire from service in the first week of October.

Sources privy to the development told BBCUrdu that Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif wanted to promote certain military officials from the rank of Major General to that of Lieutenant General.

These appointments are likely to come before the naming of the new ISI chief so that one of these Lt-Gens may be considered for the top intelligence slot, source added.
