Soon after a special court in Bangalore sentenced Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa to four years’ imprisonment and a fine of Rs.100 crore in a disproportionate assets case, AIADMK supporters started their protest statewide, and some tried to burn effigies of Karunanidhi outside his home here but DMK cadres chased them away.

Violence erupted in Tamil Nadu following the court judgment with AIADMK supporters torching buses, forcing shopkeepers to down their shutters and attacking rival party offices and cadres.

Karunanidhi had written to President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narendera Modi and others to restore law and order in the state.
