Delhi lawyers’ strike to continue, over 100 detained

New Delhi : The two-day strike by Delhi lawyers, which began on Wednesday to protest against the delay in passing the amended bill regarding enhancement of the pecuniary jurisdiction of district courts, was on Thursday extended till April 28 even as over a 100 lawyers were detained during a protest march.

The lawyers also decided to hold a rally outside parliament on April 28.

The co-ordination committee of bar associations of all the district courts in Delhi said that despite assurances, the proposed bill recommending enhancement of pecuniary jurisdiction to Rs.2 crore for the courts has not been cleared by parliament.

Committee chairman R.K. Wadhwa demanded that the bill should be passed in the ongoing session of parliament and said that the lawyers will continue the strike till April 28.

Judicial work in six city courts – Patiala House, Tis Hazari, Rohini, Karkardooma, Saket and Dwarka – was paralysed for the second consecutive day on Thursday.

Over 100 lawyers were detained while marching towards the prime minister’s residence on Thursday. “Over a hundred lawyers were detained while holding a protest march near India Gate,” a senior police official said.
