Israel joins in Nepal quake relief

New Delhi : Israel is joining in the relief and rescue operations in Nepal with the staff at their embassy here joining their counterparts in Kathmandu to assist in the humanitarian efforts in the aftermath of Saturday’s massive earthquake.

The first planes carrying assessment teams, search and rescue experts and medical personnel and supplies are on their way from Israel to Kathmandu, under direct instruction of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said an Israeli embassy release here.

Israeli Ambassador to India Daniel Carmon is in constant contact with Indian authorities to coordinate access for the Israeli relief effort. He expressed his appreciation for the constructive response from Indian authorities. “I am thankful to my Indian counterparts for their facilitation.”

Carmon said the people and government of Israel cannot stay indifferent to the tragedy of the people who were affected by the earthquake. “We are extending our heartfelt condolences to the people and governments of Nepal and India,” he said.

Thousands of young Israeli backpackers throng Kathmandu and other areas in Nepal connected with adventure tourism every year.

Ambassador Carmon said Israel will be using its experience from past relief efforts – including in the aftermath of the 2001 earthquake in Gujarat – in order to help those affected in Nepal.
