Erdogan supports early elections in Turkey

Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his support on Friday for holding early legislative elections on November 1, with a transitional government taking charge in the meantime.

The Supreme Electoral Council suggested this date on Thursday to hold the early elections after negotiations to form a coalition government had failed, reports Efe.

The constitutional 45-day mandate to form a government expires in two days, on August 23, while the parliamentary parties weighed in on the council’s proposed date

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced on Tuesday that attempts to find a junior coalition partner failed after six weeks of negotiations with the opposition, and thus returned the mandate to Erdogan, who in turn said that Turkey is “swiftly heading towards an election”.
