‘Hyderabad metro rail design is bird-inspired,’ says its MD NVS Reddy

Hyderabad: Imbibing nature’s marvel in design to build machines, the world’s largest Public Private Partnership project Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) is bird-inspired, disclosed Managing Director of HMR N.V.S. Reddy.

Addressing the students on Graduation Day of Hyderabad’s premier Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology, Reddy said, “The design deliberates its essence in the ‘spine and wings’ styled elevated corridors where the corridor itself is the spine and the sprawling stations protruding at the top are designed after a bird’s wings.”

“It was a challenge to build something that was never done before. We wanted to build the Metro without halting the traffic or building underground tunnels”, so we zeroed in on this concept – a world’s first of its kind, he added.

While HMR has drawn favourable criticism for its project from across the globe, it inevitably had its share of woes and concerns too. “16 religious structures were to be managed. If we had acted politically, it would’ve been difficult”, he said advising the students to refrain from imbibing any political influence observing that graduates in India at 2% are the privileged sections of the society.

He called upon the students to have impossible dreams and be prepared for failures observing that ‘simple engineers’ cannot do things, but those with a perspective can sell the impossible dream.

Recollecting his personal experience, Reddy exclaimed “ideas pursued with passion and commitment make the impossible possible. When we went for PPP, everybody – including my bosses- pounced on us, (in the light of Satyam scam), and Metro seemed an instant failure. There was huge criticism. But with our persistence and relentless desire to achieve the impossible, HMR is now the world’s biggest PPP project” with only 10 percent of 14132 crores managed by the concessionaire.

Students flaunt their medals merrily on the Graduation Day of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology (MJCET) at Banjara Hills in Hyderabad on Saturday.

Speaking on the occasion, Sultanul Uloom Education Society (SUES) Secretary Zafar Javeed urged the students to persistently work hard, and explore all avenues of higher education whenever possible. He advised them to acquire industrial expertise to survive the whip of the competition.

Earlier, SUES Chairman Khan Lateef Mohammed Khan administered the oath to the students. Vice Chairman Mohamed Waliullah, Treasurer Dr. Mir Akbar Ali Khan, MJCET Director cum Advisor Dr.Basheer Ahmed, Mr.NaseemNathani, Mohammed Jaffar, Dr. Zia Nadeem, Prof. S.A.Wahab, Khairuddin Ali Khan, Amir Javeed, Nisar Ahmed were also present on the occasion.

Chief Engineer of the HMR project, also an alumnus of MJCET – Mohammed Ziauddin, also graced the occasion.

Man’s inclination to design machines inspired by life forms has been for ages. Choppers designed after dragon-flies, submarines designed after whales, bullet train design inspired by a Kingfisher’s break, Mercedes’s Bionic Concept car designed after a box fix, hydraulics designed after human arms, are some prime examples.
