Centre constitutes committee for survey, study of Urdu’s status and development

Aligarh: The Centre has constituted a high level committee to survey and collect data related to the present status and development of Urdu language and employment of Urdu speaking people and its possibilities.

The committee, under the chairmanship of Brigadier Syed Ahmad Ali (Retd) Pro-Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), has been constituted by the National Commission for Minority Educational Institutions (NCMEI) under the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development.

Noted educationist and social worker Dr Shabistan Gaffar has been nominated as the convener of the Committee while Dr Jasim Mohammad, director of Jamia Urdu Aligarh has been nominated as the member secretary of the Committee.

Rita Chatterjee, NCMEI secretary has, in a letter to Jasim Mohammad, said the Commission has constituted the said committee to unearth the present status of Urdu language in country and employment to Urdu speaking people. The NCMEI, however, has not yet made any formal announcement on its own.

Noted film producer and director Mahesh Bhatt; vice chancellor of Integral University Lucknow, Prof Syed Waseem Akhtar; AMU Court Member Prof Razaullah Khan; Associate Professor in Hindi Department (AMU) Dr Shambhu Nath Tiwari; Dr Zubair Shadab Khan; eminent Urdu journalist and teacher Firoz Bakht Ahmad and Jamia Urdu OSD Farhat Ali Khan are set to be member of Committee, the letter by Chatterjee said.

Said Dr Jasim Mohammad, the NCMEI is very serious about the development of Urdu language and employment to Urdu speaking people and so the NCMEI has constituted this high level committee to take stock of the functioning of Urdu academies, Urdu medium schools, attitude and role of state governments towards Urdu, real status of Urdu in those states where it is second language.

“The status of female education in Urdu medium schools will be analyzed and its data will be collected,” he added.
