Kathmandu : Amid deepening political crisis, Nepal’s main opposition United Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist Wednesday announced it would boycott meetings of parliamentary committees to press the ruling parties into agreeing to a compromise in the constitution-drafting process.
Earlier, the party had decided not to attend the meetings of the constitution-drafting process.
According to UCPN (Maoist) spokesperson Agni Sapkota, the UCPN (Maoist) will not attend any meetings of parliamentary committees, Xinhua news agency reported. Currently, there is no parliamentary session in Nepal.
Relations between the ruling and the opposition parties have come to a low point after the ruling parties Sunday formed a Questionnaire Committee within the Constituent Assembly (CA) aimed at pushing the statute drafting process through a voting process.
The opposition parties are demanding that the new constitution should be drafted on the basis of consensus.
The Himalayan nation has missed the political parties’ self-imposed deadline of Jan 22 to draft a new constitution.
