Nine candidates from J&K in UPSC final list of 1236

Srinagar : Nine candidates from the state of Jammu and Kashmir have been selected for the coveted the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examinations 2014.

The result of the UPSC examinations 2014 was declared on Saturday afternoon in which 1236 candidates successfully qualified for the prestigious exam including nine from Jammu and Kashmir. They are: Baseer-Ul-Haq (46), Priyati Sharma (136), Ankit Kaul (414), Afaq Giri (457), Choudhary Yaseen (459), Deeba Farhat (553), Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan (560), Ruveda Salam (878) and Irfan Hafiz (1183).

Deeba Farhat Coming from a middle class family lost her father in early childhood. Deeba is already a Kashmir Administrative Service (KAS) officer presently posted in Rural Development Department in Islamabad district. She qualified KAS in 2011.

Ruveda Salam, the girl from frontier region of Kupwara in North Kashmir is presently serving in Indian Police Services posted in a South Indian state and has again cracked the coveted list of Indian Administrative Services, registering a rank of 878. In 2013, Ruveda became the first woman in Kashmir to crack the IAS examination. The daughter of former broadcaster first graduated as a medical doctor and then qualified Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS) Examination.

Athar Aamir-ul-Shafi Khan, an IIT Roorkee pass out of 2014 batch, stood at rank 560 in the list. Athar belongs to modest village of Devipora, Mattan in South Kashmir’s Islamabad district. He is the youngest boy, 22, from valley to get in to the service.

Afaq Ahmad Giri, a resident of far-flung area of Banakoot, Banihal has once again made it to the Indian Civil Service by standing 457 in the list. Last year too Afaq had qualified the prestigious exam and had ranked 585.

Afaq, an engineer by profession and a social activist, after successfully completing his mains examinations in 2013 had set out to help Muzaffarnagar riot hit victims.

Of the total 1236 successful candidates who have made to the list, only 37 (2.99%) are Muslims, seven of whom are from J&K itself.
