Asif and Ramesh have been the thickest of friends since college. They have lost touch with everyone from their class, aside from each other. Watching them stand outside this Irani cafe was a little amusing, as I realised that they were sending Whatsapp forwards to each other, while being glued to their cellphone screens. Asif has been working as a waiter since the past six years, while Ramesh is a ticket-seller at a nearby cinema hall. Ramesh was fasting on the day I met him. He isn’t a Muslim, but since his best friend is one, he has always fasted on one day during the month of Ramadan. In turn, Asif told me, he fasts for a day during Navratri.
