I was surprised to see nine-year-old Mohammed Ajahar in a factory. He was tinkering with a machine, something that seemed worrying for a child to be doing. But when I spoke to him, he told me that he was only guarding the factory while his father had walked out to buy some dates to break his fast.
“Abba explained to me why he does not eat, but I am not sure if I understand. But it makes him happy. And if he is happy, he plays with me a lot more.”
How would a nine-year-old like him guard a factory, I asked him. He laughed and told me that the only people who come by are photographers since the compound where the factory is located is in the vicinity of a photography school.
