Modi greets Muslims on Ramadan

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday greeted the Muslim community on the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

“My greetings to the Muslim community as the holy month of Ramadan begins. May this Ramadan brings peace and happiness in everyone’s lives,” Modi said on his Twitter account.

“May this holy month also enhance the spirit of harmony and togetherness in society,” he added.

Ramadan is observed as a fasting period by Muslims, who abstain from food and water from sunrise to sunset.

The banner on Ramadan greeting is interestingly green in colour, often associated with Muslims, and the messages are both in English and Urdu.

Earlier, PM Modi spoke by telephone to Pakistan and Bangladesh premiers, Nawaz Sharif and Sheikh Hasina, and Afghan President Ashran Ghani and conveyed to them good wishes for the holy month of Ramadan, an official statement here said on Tuesday.

“He (the prime minister) conveyed the good wishes for the holy month of Ramadan to them and their people. He expressed hope for peace, tranquility and harmony in their countries and in the region during this month of piety and prayers,” a Prime Minister’s Office release said.

In recent weeks PM Modi has extended olive branch towards Muslims and have in fact met two delegations, comprising of clerics and other Muslim leaders.

On June 15, while releasing a book, ‘Education of Muslims: An Islamic Perspective of Knowledge and Education – Indian Context’, by educationist JS Rajput, he quoted a Hadith and stressed on the importance of education, noting that after Allah Ilm (knowledge) is mentioned maximum number of times in Quran.
