Fasting for Ramadan 1436 begins on Friday, June 19 in most parts of India

New Delhi: Based on the reports it received from all parts of India about no sighting of the moon, the Hilal Committees has announced that Ramadan will begin in India on Friday June 19, 2015. For Kerala Muslims, however, the holy month has started on Thursday after the moon was sighted in Kozhikode district.

“A meeting of the Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee, Imarat-e-Sharaiyah-Hind was held today in New Delhi. It was decided to announce that the moon of Ramazanul Mobarak has not been sighted,” Muizuddin Ahmad, secretary of the Ruyat-e-Hilal Committee, said in a statement on Thursday.

“It is, therefore, declared that the 1st Ramzan falls on Friday, June 19,” it said.

Earlier on Wednesday, when no moon was sighted, Sayyad Ahmad Bikhari, the Imam of Jama Masjid, Delhi, had announced that the first roza should be observed on Friday.

Similar statements were issued by the Markazi Chand Committee, Farangi Mahal Lucknow; Ameer-e-Ahrar Maulana Habibur Rahman Saani Ludhiyanvi, Imam of Punjab; Maulana Mohammad Shafique, Imam of Nakhoda Mosque; Hilal Committee of Assam; All India Muslim Personal Law Board’s Murshidabad based Maulana Ishaq Madani and Maulana Nurur Rahman Barkati, Shahi Imam, Tipu Sultan Mosque.

The only exception are the Muslims of Malabar, who have started observing roza from Thursday itself as confirmation was made by different qazis following the Ramadan crescent sighted on Wednesday.

Qazis, including Panakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, Syed Mohammed KoyaJamalullaili, K V Imbichahammed and Panakkad Nasir Abdul Hayy Shihabudheen,Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, general secretary, Cherussery Zainuddin Musliar, All India Sunni Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram Aboobbacker Musliyar, Syed Ibrahim Khaleelul Bukhari and Chithari Hamza Musliyar declared the starting of the holy month on the basis of the sighting of new moon at Kappad beach in Kozhikode district (of Kerala) at around 7.30 pm on Wednesday.
Mujahid sections and Jamaate Islami Kerala will also start fasting from Thursday.

Hijra Committee of India, which uses calculation is observing first day of Ramadan on Wednesday.
