Faisal and Ahmed wanted to celebrate after breaking their fast since the latter had just received a promotion. Like most conversations today, we discussed the rain and flooding for a short while and then indulged in some nostalgia, on what the city used to be. “You see this phone behind us,” they told me, “it’s not been working for awhile, but nobody bothers about it now. Instead, you have a new business of hawkers greeting you right outside Haji Ali Juice Centre, all trying to sell you waterproof covers for expensive cellphones.”
