Training programme on Islamic structure held at AMU

Aligarh: The Heritage Cell, Aligarh Muslim University, in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence in Islamic Architecture, Department of Architecture, organized a one-week short term Training Programme on “Traditional and Modern Materials and Techniques of Façade Adornment in Islamic Structure”.

Mohammad Farhan Fazli, Convener, Heritage Cell said, “It is need of the hour to preserve our architectural heritage and conserve it for our future generations. If we lose even a part of this heritage, we will lose the unique character of our university which adds to our own identity.”

Fazli said that during the programme, hands on training was provided to the participants on preparing lime mortar with traditional materials and inlay of Islamic calligraphy with different materials in lime and stone, preparation of stone Jali, cleaning of internal wall of Jama Masjid, sketching, painting and photography of heritage buildings of AMU.

AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah (Retd.) appreciated the contents and objectives of the programme and hoped Heritage Cell will actively contribute towards the conservation of heritage buildings of the University.

Dr Asfar Ali Khan, Registrar, Prof. Hkm. Syed Zillur Rahman, President Ibn Sina Academy, Prof. Jamshed Siddiqui, Proctor and a number of faculty members and students were present in the valedictory function.

Chairman, Department of Architecture, Ar. Sanjeev Maheshwari and Coordinators of the training programme Prof. Sabih Akhtar and Ar. Mohd. Khalid Hasan expressed happiness on successful organization of the training programme.

Artisans from Taj Mahal, Agra and Jaipur and Conservation consultants from New Delhi and Gwalior provided hands-on training to the participants. Participants’ work and skill was also displayed at the venue.

Farrukh Baig, eminent artist presented Ghazals at the valedictory function.
