Former legislator shot at in Delhi, critical

New Delhi: Former Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) legislator Bharat Singh was on Sunday battling for his life in a hospital along with two of his aides after they were shot at by unidentified gunmen here during a religious programme, police said.

Bharat Singh was shot at around 8.10 p.m. when the 38-year-old was attending a religious programme at Abhinandan Vatika in south Delhi’s Najafgarh from where he was elected as a legislator in 2009.

Around 8-10 unidentified people indiscriminately fired over 15 rounds, police said.

“All the injured were rushed to Medanta the Medicity hospital in Gurgaon. Bharat Singh’s condition is said to be critical as he received more than two bullets. His aides are also in critical condition,” said a police official.

“Prima facie, it seems to be a case of personal enmity,” he said.

This was the second attack on Bharat Singh after June 2012 when four people were arrested for shooting him near his office.

He then luckily survived after receiving two bullet injuries, one in his left shoulder and another in his abdomen.

Bharat Singh is the younger brother of Kishen Pehalwan, who has more than two dozen criminal cases registered against him, police said.
