Crime Gazette 2014 released; decreasing trend in crimes in J&K

Srinagar: The crime rate in Jammu and Kashmir has registered a decreasing trend in 2014 as compared to its previous year, according to the Crime Gazette released by Director General of Police (DGP) K Rajendra Kum.

Crime Gazette for year 2014 was released on Wednesday at a function held at Crime Headquarters in Srinagar.

“The gazette is a firsthand information about the crime situation of the State and provides a vital data base for strategy building and designing crime containment initiatives,” an official statement said.

The gazette shows decreasing trend in crime scenario in the State during the year 2014 as compared to previous year. It reveals that 25390 cases were registered under various heads of crime during the year as against 26907 cases during 2013. It also shows decrease in the crime against women as 3535 cases were registered during the year, against 3714 during the corresponding previous year.

Speaking on the occasion, the DGP said that investigation of special crimes is a major responsibility of Jammu and Kashmir Crime Branch of the Police and the agency has to improve its working by adopting latest methods of investigation helping speedy disposal of crime cases.

He said that criminals pose a great threat to the peaceful atmosphere as the crime is a basic cause of all evils. He said that the investigating agencies have to strengthen their mechanism and the civil society has also an important role in crime detection.

Rajendra also appreciated the efforts of State Crime Branch, saying that the initiative would help different wings of Jammu and Kashmir Police to assess and evaluate their performance and concentrate on improvements in different fields of policing. He asked for dedicated efforts by the investigating officers for speedy disposal of the cases, ensuring conviction of accused on merit, the statement added.
