Councillor’s driver’s killing sparks gang war in Gurgaon, two held

Gurgaon : The driver of a Gurgaon councillor was shot dead, which triggered a retaliatory attack on Sunday that left a man injured in what police said was a ‘gang war’. Two people have been arrested for their involvement in the gang war.

The body of the 25-year-old driver Ashok Kumar was found in Shakti Nagar area. He was the nephew of gangster-turned-councillor Binder Gujjar.

Gujjar alleged that Sandeep Garauli and his gang were behind the murder. He told police that Ashok Kumar left his home around 1.30 a.m. on Sunday. He was fired at in his car.

A few hours later, a 35-year-old man named Manish Khurana was injured in firing allegedly by the councillor’s men, police said.

Khurana and his friend Pankaj Bangia alias Golu were allegedly attacked by members of the Gujjar camp who believe that they were responsible for Ashok Kumar’s killing.

Khurana told police that 3-4 men fired at him when he was at home in Arjun Nagar.

Police said Khurana, who received a bullet in his head, also fired in retaliation.

Khurana, who is linked to the Sandeep Garauli gang, had contested the civic polls here against Gujjar in 2010 but lost.

An FIR against the councillor and his men was registered following the attack, a police officer told IANS.

Two people from the councillor’s camp were on Sunday arrested for opening fire at Khurana, in a bid to take revenge for the murder of the driver, police said.

Durgesh alias Appu, a resident of Model Town area of Gurgaon, and Manoj alias Pancham who hails from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, were arrested from a house in Arjun Nagar area.

Both have criminal records in their names, but not for heinous crimes.

Police said councillor Binder Gujjar had last week hired Pancham, a shooter, as he feared the opposition gang will attack him.

The arrested duo will be presented before a court on Monday, police said.
