All 60,000 rail coaches to have dustbins soon: Prabhu

New Delhi: All 60,000 railways coaches will soon be provided with dustbins to ensure a clean travelling environment, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said on Friday.

“All the 60,000 coaches will be provided with dustbins and the target will be reached as soon as possible,” Prabhu said while inaugurating an international conference here on rail coaches.

Currently, all conventional air-conditioned coaches manufactured at the Integrated Coach Factory at Chennai and non-AC LHB coaches manufactured at Rail Coach Factory in Punjab’s Kapurthala are equipped with dustbins.

Noting there had been much progress in making passenger coaches more user-friendly, the minister stressed on ensuring clean toilets, linen and curtains, as well as making seats and the ladders to climb the berths more user-friendly.

With the Indian Railways carrying over 25 million passengers daily, Prabhu said the emphasis should be on “designing the entire architecture of services catering to all, including the poor”.

He also said the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the National Institute of Design are both making progress in the design of coach interiors.
