IANS today reported that BJP and AIUDF are exploring post-poll deal in Assam and that they are in talk.

However, soon after this news Ajmal tweeted and distanced AIUDF’s potential post-poll alliance with BJP.

“All news reports about any discussion with BJP are baseless and merely a malicious propaganda,” Ajmal said in a tweet earlier today, refuting claims made by Subir Bhaumik for the IANS agency.

In another tweet he said, “Local media reports says I am discussing post-poll deal with BJP leaders in Delhi. For their info- I am in Makkah performing Umrah”.

The two phases of elections concluded on 11 April in Assam and the results will be announced on 19 May.

The Congress is fighting a substantial anti incumbency wave in the state and the BJP is tipped by many to end the Congress regime. Both ways the AIUDF is expected to play the role of King Maker, and this explains Ajmal’s calculated comments on possible post-poll alliance.

“All depends on how many seats go to whom. That will influence our decision whom to support,” Ajmal told the media, according to the IANS report.

The IANS report also pointed out that Himanta Biswa Sarma, a BJP leader who was earlier with Congress and was in Gogoi’s cabinet holds good relations with Ajmal and therefore BJP is expected to rope AIUDF after polls with his help.

During the run up to the elections, AIUDF made sure to attack both the Congress and the BJP. However, the party is well aware that any alliance with BJP is unlikely to go down well with its voter base. Likewise, an alliance with the AIUDF will make it extremely tough for BJP to defend and maintain.
