AMU seeks CBI inquiry into killings

Aligarh : Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has sought a CBI or SIT probe into the violence on the campus that left two students dead.

Vice Chancellor Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah made the request in a letter to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

He also wanted the probe to cover the damage done to vehicles and the proctor’s office on the night of April 23.

Aligarh District Magistrate Balkar Singh has already ordered a time-bound magisterial inquiry into the violence.

But the university feels that the Central Bureau of Investigation or a Special Investigation Team must get to the bottom of how and why two groups of students clashed.

Earlier, the vice chancellor announced that in future every room in all hostels would be vacated by students by June 15. Only medical students would be allowed to stay on.

AMU has also decided that no person will be allowed to enter the administrative block without valid proof of identity or prior appointment.

The university has made it clear that everyone’s identity will be checked at entry points.
