Kolkata : Days after three people were awarded the death penalty for gang-raping and murdering a college student in West Bengal’s Kamduni, the BJP on Wednesday began a 10-day march from the village in North 24 Parganas district to highlight the rising crimes against women in the state.
Led by the BJP women’s wing national president Vijaya Rahatkar and state chief Roopa Ganguly, the march will culminate at Kakdwip in South 24 Parganas district.
While a 16-year-old girl was gang-raped and killed in Kakdwip in November, three people have been sentenced to death and three others given life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a college student in Kamduni in 2013.
Urging people to stand up against growing crimes against women, Rahatkar hit out at Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The BJP leaders also slammed the Trinamool Congress government over rising human trafficking in the state.
In December 2015, altogether 16 mass organisations of the Left parties including the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), the women’s wing of the Communist Party of India-Marxist had organised a cycle march from Kamduni to Kakdwip deriding the high crime chart against women.
