Jharkhand government told to pay Rs 1 lakh for minor tribal’s custodial death

Ranchi : The Jharkhand High Court on Wednesday ordered the state government to pay Rs 1 lakh as compensation within 24 hours to the family of a minor tribal boy allegedly killed in police custody, a lawyer said.

Taking suo motu notice of the matter, the high court also issued notice to the state and sought a reply within six weeks on Rupesh Swansy’s death.

The minor was picked up by Ranchi Police from a shop at Bundu, around 50 km from Ranchi, on suspicion of being a Maoist supporter earlier this month.

The minor’s sister said policemen brutally beat him, resulting in his death.

Two police officials have been suspended and one of their seniors transferred in connection with the alleged custodial death.

The state has handed over the case to the Crime Investigation Department for probe and asked it to submit a report in three months.
