Swamy wants discussion on Mahatma Gandhi killing

New Delhi : BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Tuesday demanded a discussion on Mahatma Gandhi’s assassination, saying no autopsy was conducted on the body.

Raising the issue in the Rajya Sabha amid protests from the Congress, Swamy said this must be debated as “parliamentarians” were making comments on it and had to be pulled up by the Supreme Court.

“Recently the Narendra Modi government has placed most files related to the assassination in the National Archives. I had a chance to go through them.

“A lot of comments are being made including by parliamentarians. The Supreme Court has had to pull them up and give them a warning,” he said.

The Supreme Court recently pulled up Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi over his “collective denunciation” of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and said he may have to face trial for alleging that the RSS killed Mahatma Gandhi.

As Congress members protested that no names should be taken, Swamy replied: “I will only name Mahatma Gandhi. I won’t take any other Gandhi’s name.”

Mahatma Gandhi was shot dead at a prayer meeting here on January 30, 1948 by Nathuram Godse, who was hanged along with Narayan Apte for the killing.

Over the decades, the RSS has repeatedly denied claims by Godse’s brother that he (Nathuram Godse) was associated with the RSS.

Swamy said that Mahatma Gandhi was not subjected to any post-mortem.

“As a consequence there was a dispute in the trial on the number of bullets fired. The newspapers said four bullets, the prosecution said three bullets…,” he added.

The zero hour got over before Swamy could complete his statement.
