“I don’t remember ever wanting to become a teacher.”

Binish Affan laments the lack of role models in academics. A post-graduate in Microbiology, becoming involved with managing a junior school wasn’t what she had planned. But as the principal for a few years now of a school which imparts Islamic learning as part of a contemporary curriculum, she realises there is the need for “overhaul in the system”. This becomes more important when teaching younger children, whose needs are more specialised and sensitive.

The school is closed for vacations during Ramadan. Taking this time to plan, Binish also feels the need for parents to become more engaged in their offspring’s education. “Providing the right environment to the child is important,” she remembers from her interactions with families, “and in a lot of cases, parents are seen to be somewhat lax in their end of the responsibility”.
