Kolkata/Kabul : The Afghan and Indian governments are working at “various levels” to secure the release of an Indian woman development worker abducted in Kabul, her brother said on Saturday.
Judith D’Souza, 40, who works for the Agh Khan Network, an NGO, was seized by gunmen around midnight Thursday in the Qala-e-Fatullah area of Kabul.
“As of now efforts are being made at various levels within the governments of India and Afghanstan,” Jerome D’Souza tweeted.
Afghan media reports also said that efforts were on to track down Judith but did not provide details. The kidnappers are suspected to be Islamists.
Sympathisers and well-wishers are appealing to the governments of both countries on Facebook page ‘Bring Back Judith’ and on Twitter to press for Judith’s swift and safe release.
D’Souza had reportedly worked for the NGO for a year and was due to leave for India soon.
On Friday, her family in Kolkata urged the Indian and Afghan governments to act fast to secure her release.
“We want the government to return our daughter,” said Gloria D’Souza, the victim’s mother.
The Indian embassy in Kabul is in touch with senior Afghan authorities over the kidnap saga.
“Afghan officials have said they are doing everything possible to secure the early release of the woman,” TOLO News reported.
