Hailing from Malda in West Bengal, Jameel came to Kanpur around 8 years ago. Studying at a local madrassa, he became a Hafiz a few years later. These days, he teaches young children to recite the Quran.

During Ramadan, he has the added responsibility of reciting the Quran during Taraweeh. “I’ve completed one round of Taraweeh for this year a couple of days ago,” he said while talking about his schedule.

Taraweeh gets organised for anything between 3 to 27 nights, and he recited the entire Quran over a course of 10 nights. It’s his third year, and he misses the first year when he recited over 27 nights. “There’s a lot of pressure,” he explains, “and then you have to keep reciting at a fast pace which takes away the fun.”
