Agartala : A two-day CPI-M central committee meeting scheduled to be held next week to review the results of the five assembly polls has been postponed, a party leader said here on Friday.
“The central committee meeting of the CPI-M, which was to be held on May 23-24 in New Delhi to review the results of the assembly polls in five states, has been postponed. However, the politburo meeting would be held on May 22,” Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) central committee member Bijan Dhar told IANS.
“Though the fresh date of the central committee meeting is yet to be finalised, it is likely to be held next month after the review of the election results at the state level,” Dhar said.
The 93-member CPI-M central committee would thoroughly scrutinise the party’s performance in five states specially the “electoral disaster in West Bengal”.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, who is the lone CPI-M politburo member from Tripura, would attend the meeting of the party’s highest decision-making body on May 22.
Though the CPI-M leadership in Tripura is upbeat over the party’s good performance in Kerala, they were upset over the Left Front’s poorest performance in West Bengal.
“The central committee of the party never decided to form a seat adjustment with the Congress, it is the state leaders of the party who did the seat adjustments to defeat the Trinamool Congress,” Dhar added.
He said that the overall poll outcome, specially in West Bengal, was not up to expectations of the CPI-M, but ruled out any major impact of the election results on Tripura.
Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, cheerful over their parties’ performance in the elections, separately claimed that they would dislodge the Left parties in Tripura in the 2018 assembly polls. The Lefty Front has been in power in Tripura since 1993
The Trinamool Congress on Friday organised a rally here to celebrate the party’s unexpected performance in West Bengal.
“We would definitely come to the power in Tripura in the 2018 assembly polls as the misrule of the Left Front government hugely affected the common people,” Trinamool’s Tripura unit chairman Ratan Chakraborty said just before starting a victory rally here on Friday.
The state BJP is also planning a state-wide celebration of the electoral victory in Assam and other states.
“The electoral victory in Assam is historic and it would help us expand footprint in the remaining northeastern states ruled by Congress and Left Front. Our allout preparation against the Left Front in Tripura in 2018 assembly elections has got a major fillip after party’s immense victory in Assam,” BJP’s Tripura unit president Biplab Deb told reporters.
Suspended Congress leaders led by former Congress Legislature Party leader Sudip Roy Barman, who was the opposition leader in the state assembly, would soon go to Kolkata to meet Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee to discuss about their joining with the party.
